Once again, our National Exhibition proved to be a vibrant celebration of bonsai culture, drawing visitors, members, and friends from across the country. The atmosphere throughout the day reflected the enthusiasm and commitment that continue to shape our community.

This year’s displays offered an impressive cross‑section of bonsai styles and levels of experience. Our club members curated a varied collection of trees, each arranged to emphasise character, seasonality, and artistic intent. The Open Section added further depth, featuring contributions from enthusiasts beyond the Association. We were also proud to present an outstanding showcase of mature bonsai from the Scottish Bonsai Collection, whose presence brought a sense of heritage and refinement to the exhibition.

Among the most admired exhibits were the Mame and Shohin compositions presented by Maurice and Ian whose precision and refined styling drew praise from visitors throughout the day. Maurice also submitted an extraordinary Ginkgo display that captured imaginations, a miniature prehistoric landscape complete with a tiny dinosaur figure, creating a scene that felt both playful and artistically thoughtful. This unique composition stood out so strongly that the Consul General, Mr Katsutoshi Takeda selected it as his favourite tree in the entire exhibition, awarding it his trophy.

There was a programme of learning opportunities which ran alongside the exhibition. This included,

An origami corner lead by the Consulate, aiming to create a thousand cranes (Senbazuru) which provided a valuable opportunity for both children and adults to experience Japanese Culture. We didn’t reach 1,000 cranes this time, but it’s a meaningful and hopeful tradition we’ll continue to build at future evets.

Members delivered short talks on topics such as Suiseki appreciation, the different styles of bonsai and how to wire bonsai. There were hands‑on sessions on hand‑building pottery which encouraged visitors to have a go. The kids absolutely loved it, especially the chance to get their hands dirty and create something of their own, which kept them happily occupied and proudly showing off their muddy masterpieces.

Throughout the day, Ian D carried out a live styling demonstration, guiding audiences through the creative and technical decisions involved in shaping a bonsai. His explanations and willingness to answer questions made the session especially engaging.

Our traders once again provided a valuable resource for attendees, offering trees, pots, tools, and expert advice. Their contribution ensured that visitors could leave not only inspired but also equipped to continue their bonsai journey.
