GRIT - Horticultural Grit is a grit with neutral pH which is used for improving soil drainage, top dressing lawns and as a planting base for alpine, cacti and rock plants.  It is used also in bonsai but has tended to be replaced by lighter materials (such as pumice/moler clay) which do the same job.
