CELL - The basic unit of all plant tissue consisting of a nucleus embedded in protoplasm and cell sap which is in turn surrounded by the membranous cell wall. Plant growth is caused by the division of cells at the growing points. There are thousands of different kinds of cells, each modified to perform a specific function and each unique to its own species.
