BUD TYPE - The beginnings of a shoot which may develop into a branch, leaf or flower. There are many different classifications of bud type although the most commonly used terms in Bonsai refer to their location : Terminal bud (located at the tip of a stem), axillary (located inside the axil of a leaf) and adventitious bud (occurring elsewhere on the branch or trunk).
