Hardy deciduous tree with thin peeling white bark and medium sized "inverted teardrop shaped leaves with slightly serrated edges.
Prevalent all over Europe - in mountains in the south and in the lowlands further north.
STYLE : Suitable for most styles except literati but particularly good for group diplays.

LOCATION : Prefers warm, sunny position with lots of light.
REPOT : Every 2-3 years while young, and less frequently when older, in early spring just prior to bud burst.
SOIL : 60% soil, 20% peat, 20% coarse sand. Balance can be adjusted according to local conditions. pH 5.0-6.0.
PRUNE : Early/late winter for main or crossing branches. Remove suckers which arise from the basis of the trunk promptly.
PINCH : Trim new shoots constantly throughout summer, to one or two leaves.
WATER : Daily throughout growing season but infrequently during winter months.
FEED : Start balanced feed one month after bud burst thenevery two weeks during growing period, with a gap in mid summer. In autumn use a fertilizer high in potassium.
