Existing Bonsai A To Z Entry for Malathion Malathion  - (Treatments) Malathion is an organophosphate pesticide effective on a broad variety of insect pests. Malathion can turn young leaves black. Insecticides containing bifenthrin are suggested by expert bonsai artists Peter Chan because they are kinder than malathion to younger leaves. A light spray during winter will kill any eggs. Advice is not to use Malathion on Ficus, Crassu- la, Podocarpus or buttonwood.
