Existing Bonsai A To Z Entry for Chinese Hackberry (Celtis sinensis) Chinese Hackberry (Celtis sinensis)  - (Tree Type (Indoors)) Small deciduous tree with shiny oval leaves and small bright orange fruits. This plant is fully hardy but often sold as indoor where it will thrive if a dormancy period can be engineered. STYLE : Best suited to formal/informal upright, slanting, semi-cascade, broom, root-over-rock, clasped to rock, twin trunk, clump, or multiple trunk. WARNING : Needs a dormant period when kept indoors, otherwise tree will become exhausted. Care Info REPOT : Annually in spring. Use deeper than normal pot. SOIL : Free draining soil : 40:60 grit:organic. PRUNE : Major branch pruning and thinning of over-dense twigs in late winter/early spring. PINCH: Trim to shape during growing season. WATER : Water well in growing season and fairly moist in dormant season. FEED : Low nitrogen during growing season. Nitrogen free from late summer to leaf fall. WARNING : Needs a dormant period when kept indoors, otherwise tree will become exhausted.
