
Shrub with heavily spiked branches bearing small, oval leaves, white flowers in spring/summer and clusters of red/orange/yellow berries in the autumn.
STYLE : Suits informal upright, slanting, cascade, semi-cascade, root-over-rock, clasped-to-rock and clump.
WARNING: Spines are lethal - tips can be trimmed. Branches are stiff and easily broken. Wire and bend when young and thereafter with great care.
Care Info
REPOT : Every 2 years in spring. SOIL : 40:60 grit:organic.
PRUNE : Spring prune to shape. New shoots emanate from side of spines so prune back to the spine which points in the direction required for the new shoot.
PINCH : Pinch out larger leaves during growing season.
WATER : Keep wet but not saturated. Dryness will result in poor flowering/fruiting and also dieback.
FEED : Balanced feed weekly until flowering and then low nitrogen through to autumn.
