Existing Bonsai A To Z Entry for Pruning Pruning  - (Procedure) In order to develop a bonsai from an existing plant, branches will need to be pruned in order to establish the overall structure of the tree. This is referred to as the "subtraction" method. Pruning of established bonsai is also required to remove new shoots and foliage, in order to maintain the overall shape and design of the tree.  Pruning of the trees roots is also required to maintain healthy bonsai (see Root Pruning).
